EPUB is the open standard format for e-books, supported by most e-readers, apps and libraries. However, Amazon Kindle devices are the big exception here and do not support EPUB directly. Technical details about EPUB and MOBI
EPUB (Electronic Publication) was introduced in 2007 by the International Publishing Forum (IDPF) as an open standard for digital books. The format is based on HTML, CSS and XML and is basically a ZIP archive with specially structured "web PAGES". This architecture enables so-called "reflowable content", i.e. content that can be adapted to the screen width, and the font size and font type can also be changed.
MOBI, on the other hand, was originally developed by the French company Mobipocket, which was acquired by Amazon in 2005. The format became the basis of the Kindle ecosystem. Technically, MOBI is older and less flexible than EPUB; for example, CSS is only supported to a limited extent. Amazon has now largely replaced MOBI with AZW and KF8, but older Kindle devices and "Send to Kindle" continue to support MOBI without any problems.
Conversion from EPUB to MOBI is usually possible without loss of quality, as both formats are based on similar principles. However, complex details and layouts may be simplified.
